in cactus, the leaves are reduced to spines. why?​

MOST SPECIES OF CACTI HAVE LOST TRUE LEAVES , RETAINING ONLY SPINES, WHICHARE HIGHLY MODIFIED LEAVES. SPINES HELP PREVENT WATER LOSS BY REDUCING AIRFLOW  CLOSE TO THE CACTUS AND PROVIDING SOME SHADE.
