Answer:

Criteria for differentiation of integral and peripheral protein are as follows:

LOCATION:

1. Integral proteins are also called Transmembrane proteins. As the name suggests, these proteins span the whole cross-section of the cell membrane.

2. On the other hand, Peripheral proteins are those which are present on the outer aspect of the lipid bilayer of the cell membrane.

FUNCTIONS:

1. Integral proteins are responsible for maintaining the integrity of the cell. For example : BAND 3 is a Transmembrane protein responsible for integrity of RBC membrane.

2. Peripheral proteins are mainly involved in cell recognition by acting as receptors.

They may also provide antigenicity to the cell.

Answer:

Unlike integral membrane proteins, peripheral proteins do not enter into the hydrophobic space within the cell membrane. Instead, peripheral proteins have specific sequences of amino acids which allow them to attract to the phosphate heads of the lipid molecules or to integral proteins.
