The initiative to start ICT or Information and Communications Technology was started around 2005 in Rwanda, Africa. The KIE (Kigali Institute of Education) was the first to introduce ICT as a part of EdQual Project in educational institutions. This was funded by the UK Department for International Development and other African partners.
· 2006 – NEPAD e-Africa Commission launches projects to develop ICT in schools at primary and secondary levels. Gradually it was implemented in all Rwandan secondary schools.
· 2009 – Rwanda Education Commons (REC) is started as a 4-year program to promote ICT in education. Funded by the USAID, it was successful project and ICT expanded in the education goals. One Laptop Per child project was also initiated by the Ministry of Education.
· 2015 – 1200 students were trained in ICT related programs.
· 2016 – 14,000 students were trained in ICT related programs.
