They don't. Modern rails are stretched beyond any thermal expansion possible under normal meteorological conditions and then welded. Thus Continuous Welded Rail. Earlier rails were laid with gaps in order to stop the rail buckling when it expanded when heated. Unfortunately, if the rail moves longitudinally through the shoes after repeated thermal expansion or much wear the gaps close, and on the nexr really hot day the rail buckles and you have a derailment on the cards.
