I think it was there to show the power and achievements of Ed Warren and Lorraine Warren.
Also the doll was used as a prop to horrify the daughter of Warrens by the ghost.
It was also there to set up an atmosphere of horror in the beginning.

Wait I wanna tell you something. I was watching a video on youtube.
It was about top 5 things that cannot be explained.
I found out that real Anabell doll case of 1978 was solved by Ed and Lorraine. So it was there in the movie to give reference to their previous cases.
