'In democracy, the principle of non-discrimination extends to social life as well'.

  • Democracy is not only a form of government rather a way of life that must be acknowledged in every organisation and institution.

  • The principle of equality and non discrimination forms the bedrock of any democratic society, as it ensure no discrimination on the basis of caste, creed , religion or sex and also guarantees equal opportunities to all.

  • Equality has many facets, one of them being political equality which ensures equal set of political rights to all and also universal adult franchise.

  • A democratic system is based on the principle of liberty, equality and guarantees civil and political rights to all.

  • Democracy is to viewed in terms of expanding itself to all groups and to the grass root level so as to ensure active participation of people.

  • Democracy has to ensure equality in social life as well, where all groups are able to lead a dignified life.

  • It implies end of caste based prejudices where despite legal and political mechanisms to protect the lower caste, they continue to face discrimination. For them attaining equality is a continuous struggle.

  • Lower caste become target of the attitude of the upper caste, there are incidents of violence against them, for instance, rape of a dalit women by the upper caste, banning their entry into Brahminical dominant temples.

  • Dalits for instance, continue to remain vulnerable and poverty ridden.

  • Real democracy can only be attained if there exist social equality.

The principle of non-discrimination extends to social life as well. The Constitution mentions one extreme form of social discrimination, the practice of untouchability , and clearly directs the government to put an end to it. The practice of untouchability has been forbidden in any form. It refers to any belief or social practice which looks down upon people on account of their birth with certain caste labels. Such practice denies them interaction with others or access to public places as equal citizens. So, the constitution has made untouchability a punishable offence.
