In element table we say cl as chlorine but when it is as a compound we say chloride.eg,sodium chloride.But why?

as it is written empty(cl2) but when it is written as a compound it is written as (cl)for example NaCl.
so,we can say that Cl2 is chlorine and Cl is chloride
so,we can say that Cl2 is chlorine and Cl is chloride
