Arthur chooses to leave Hetty and Hayslope. Hetty later, agrees to marry Adam. However, she discovers that she is pregant a few days before her marriage to Adam, and leaves to look for Arthur.

She is keeps searching for him but fails, she gives birth to the child with a generous lady she came across. She abandons the child in a field. The child keeps crying, and this brings Hetty back to retrieve it but she finds the child dead due to exposure. Hetty accidentally commits infanticide.
