The evolutionary process is always not progressive. Development of complex body designs doesn't mean these species have better chances of survival.
Among bacteria, spiders, fish, and chimpanzees, it is difficult to say which organism has a better design because these belong to different species.
However, bacteria which has the simplest body system can survive extreme chemical conditions, droughts, salt water, high temperatures even around volcanic eruption.

- It depends on our perception of 'better' design. If complexity of body design is the criterion, then chimpanzee is obviously better. But if ability of survival in almost all kinds of habitat is criterion then bacteria are far ahead than any other group of organisms. Bacteria have a simple body design are still the most universal organism foumd on earth. They can survive hot springs, deep sea, and even freezing environment of Antartica.
