In Figure 4, ABCD is a square of side 4 cm. A quadrant of a circle of radius 1 cm is drawn at each vertex of the square and a circle of diameter 2 cm is also drawn. Find the area of the shaded region. (Use π = 3.14)

When the quadrants of the circle on the vertex of the square are joined a circle of radius 1 cm is formed.

To get the area of the shaded region we need to get the area of the unshaded  regions .

The area of the circle at the center of the square = 3.14 × (2/2)² = 3.14 cm²

Area of the four quadrants  = 3.14 × 1² = 3.14 cm²

Area of the square = 4 × 4 = 16 cm²

The area of the shaded region = area of the square - ( area of the circle at the center + The total area of the quadrants)

= 16 - (3.14 + 3.14) = 16 - 6.28

= 9.72 cm²
