Consider two parallel line l // m and cut by a transversal t which makes angles 1 , 2 , 3 and 4 at with line l and 5,6 , 7 and 8 with m .

From the figure , following are the angles related to each other :

Vertically opposite angles : When two lines intersect each other , the pair of angles formed vertically opposite are equal to each other .

  • ∠1 = ∠8
  • ∠2 = ∠5
  • ∠3 = ∠4
  • ∠7 = ∠6

Alternate interior angles : When two parallel lines are intersected by a transversal , the angles in the interior of parallel lines alternate to each other are equal .

  • ∠8 = ∠2
  • ∠3 = ∠7

Alternate exterior angles : When two parallel lines are intersected by a transversal, the angles in exterior of parallel lines alternate to each other are equal .

  • ∠1 = ∠5
  • ∠4 =∠6

Corresponding angles : When two parallel lines are intersected by a transversal, the corresponding angles formed are equal to each other .

  • ∠1 = ∠2
  • ∠3 = ∠6
  • ∠4 = ∠7
  • ∠8 = ∠5

Co - interior angles : When two parallel lines are intersected by a transversal, the sum of interior angles adjacent to each other is 180° .

  • ∠3 + ∠2 = 180°
  • ∠8 + ∠7 = 180°
