There were originally ten:

1) Slay the Nemean Lion and bring back it's pelt

2) Slay the nine-headed Lernean Hydra

3) Hunt down the Golden Hind of Artemis

4) Capture the Erymanthian Boar

5) Clean the Augean Stables in one day

6) Slay the Stymphalian Birds

7) Retrieve the Cretan Bull and bring back it's horns

8) Steal the man-eating Mares of Diomedes without his knowing

9) Obtain the girdle of Hippolyta, Queen of the Amazons

10) Kill the monster Geryon and steal his cattle

But his master, Eurystheus, claimed he cheated on task Five and failed task Eight, so he ordered him to do two more:

11) Steal the apples of the Hesperides

12) Capture and bring back Cerberus alive

Hercules was actually supposed to do 10 labours, but his master, Eurystheus made him do 2 extra labours, so it's totally 12.
