The public paid taxes in two ways.

TITHES: It was the tax public paid to the church.

TAILLE: It was the tax third estate paid to the state. It was the direct tax.

There were direct and indirect taxes. Indirect taxes were everyday consumption.

The people of only third estate paid the tax. they paid a direct tax to the government called tallie. the church too extracted its tax called tithes and they also paid a number of indirect to the government which were levied on articles of everyday consumption like salt or tobacco.
