In India womens have low literacy rate because in India womens was not given importance. Some backward minded people think that giving education to woman is like committing a sin. They have only to do is to Marry and take care of the family. Very few women have the chance to study and the get the support of the family, that's why the literacy rate of women is low.

Back in before 20th century womens and girls dint had freedom and were not allowed as boys to go out. Those who were able to afford a teacher in home they used to call especially for girls. But for the poor they had no choice. After the independence women's started to get education, many of them fought for their rights, Today in 21st century india is coming out of this problem and recently the state of kerala received the 100%literary rate status among the 100%majority of them were girls. Through its still low in some regions soon it will rise up.In some affected areas by naxal, terrorists,maoists it becomes difficult to reach school/educational place.Women has the right to enjoy equal powers as men according to article 14 of the indian constitution.
