Explanation:

Rural India still lives in the dark ages.

Rural India believes that sons offer families financial security and stability when their parents grow old and retire and so, whatever money is spent on their son’s education is an investment and not a liability.

Sons, in a matter of speaking, are considered a kind of insurance for many families.

Daughter’s on the other hand, are meant to stay home, take care of the household, and nurse the sick. Finally, when it’s time to get them married, families need to pay varying amounts of dowry depending on the economic position of the groom and his family.

This, for the poor, is a burden - a liability, if you may. Thus, girls, are an expense families prefer not having.

Besides, for reasons unfathomable, sons are the ones who are going to “preserve” the family name - not the daughters.

So, it’s always better to cut short an expense from manifesting itself. Get rid of the unborn girl child.
