The length of the altitude to the base is 15 cm.

Given data :

Length of a leg = 17 cm

Base = 16 cm

The altitude to the base divides the triangle into two right angle triangle.

Of one of these right angle triangles,

Base = 16/2 = 8 cm

Height = altitude = let , x cm

Hypotenuse = 17 cm

According to the Pythagoras theorem,

8² + x² = 17²

64 + x² = 289

x² = 289-64

x² = 225

x = 15 (answer)
