During the medieval period, landlords became the ipso facto owner of the soil. Earlier peasants who worked on that land were also the owners of the farm.

During the middle ages, feudalism was introduced. Each landlord had several acres of land in his name and the peasants were treated as tenants of the land.

Peasants would work and give a major part of their agricultural produce as rent to landlord.
