in mendel's experiment, why did wrinkled seeds show up in the F2 generation, even through they were not present in the F1 generation
Answers
In the F1 generation there was a cross between the dominant pairs and the recessive pairs .
During the cross of round green and wrinkled yellow :-
(i) round and green are dominant
(ii) wrinkled and yellow are recessive .
According to the Mendel's laws " Out of a pair of two different characters , only one character is expressed while the other remains suppressed "
Thus the dominant pair is always able to express itself .
During the F1 cross :
One dominant pair was present in each gamete and one recessive was also present thus making them heterozygous. As the dominant always expresses itself , all the seeds were round .
During the F2 cross :
There were several crosses and homozygous recessive was formed . Two recessive alleles hence produced the wrinkled seed .
Hope it helps !
