The reasons why in most plays of Gupta period, only the kings and brahmins speak in Sanskrit and ordinary people in Prakrit are as :
1. Firstly Sanskrit was the language of elite and only the elites used to speak it properly.
2. Prakrit was a simple language and thus the language of ordinary people.
3. Prakrit was considered as the language of lower strata and the Sanskrit of upper strata of society.
4. During the Gupta period language was closely related to the status of people.
