To be classed as a citizen in fifth-century Athens you had to be male, born from two Athenian parents and over eighteen years old, and complete your military service. Women, slaves, metics and children were not allowed to become citizens.

d. be native-born and own land

Explanation:

  • Athenian citizenship was restricted to men and women provided whose parents were the citizen of  Athens
  • Out of all the people who lived in the city of Athens, only male citizens who were older than eighteen years could become a part of the demos, implying  only approximately 40000 people could partake in the democratic process (that is, participate in the law courts and the assembly).
  • Women were citizens, however without voting/political rights. Slaves were not considered to be citizens, and they were provided with only some basic rights.
