In Paragraph 5 the taxi driver 'ground' his car into gear. What does this tell you about the state of the gears? What else can 'ground' mean?

Answer:

The fact that the gears were grinding tells us that the gears were old and probably rusty. Ground can also mean the literal earth beneath your feet, or it could mean (in past tense) a substance being broken down into very fine pieces.
