Towards the center of the earth.

Explanation:

If you are talking about placing a body on the surface of the earth. The earth will pull that body by dint of gravitational force towards it's center. The earth is a solid sphere & it is assumed it's mass is concentrated at the center. So,the earth is a "point mass" situated at the center.

Now, if you place a body over a plane parallel to X-axis the earth will pull that mass perpendicular to the X axis, i.e vertically downward along Y axis.
