The Himalayan mountain range and Tibetan plateau have formed as a result of the collision between the Indian Plate and Eurasian Plate which began 50 million years ago and continues today.

225 million years ago (Ma) India was a large island situated off the Australian coast and separated from Asia by the Tethys Ocean.

Here is how the Himalayas were formed:

  • The Earth's crust was initially a large, super - continent called Pangaea.
  • Pangaea split into several lands forming Angaraland and Gondwanaland.
  • The Indo - Australian Plate broke from the Gondwana and drifted towards the north.
  • Due to the collision with the Eurasian Plate, the sedimentary rocks which were accumulated called the Tethys, were folded inward forming Western Asia and the Himalayas.

Hope it helps :)
