Hi friend,

Here is the answer :

* According to Newton's second law of motion the rate of change of momentum of a body is directly proportional to the applied force and takes place in the direction in which the force acts.

* So In pole the athletes are made to land on the thick mattress.

* This is because when the athlete jump on a soft landing site, the jumper takes a longer time to stop his movement.

* I mean the rate of change of momentum of the athletes is less due to which a less stopping force is acted on the athlete and he/she does not get injured.

* Whereas if he/she falls on the hard surface then his/her momentum is reduced to zero in short time interval.

* And also the rate of change of momentum is large due to which a large opposing force is acted on the athlete and thus he/she would get injured.
