When reacting with water why does clay swell more than sandstone?

clay absorbs more water as compare to sandstone

clay has a porous property which is greater than the podium property of sandstone..

both the substances get swelled when react with water but
clay swells more because it has the property to absorb more water than sandstone..

clay can also hold water for a longer and effective way than sandstone

therefore it swells more
