clay has a porous property which is greater than the podium property of sandstone..
both the substances get swelled when react with water but
clay swells more because it has the property to absorb more water than sandstone..
clay can also hold water for a longer and effective way than sandstone
therefore it swells more
HOPE THIS HELPS YOU
