Tuber: A swollen underground stem that bears axillary buds in the axils of scale leaves present on them is called tuber.

The potato tuber is an underground stem tuber.

The structures in rainy season , that are found was called buds.

Each bud is capable of growing into a new plant. Therefore, these buds act as organs for vegetative reproduction in potato.

Some special structures on potatoes:

  • The vegetable potato is actually a tuber. So, during the rainy season, the eyes on the potato (the spots you find on potatoes) grows buds.
  • These buds germinate to form new potato plants. They sprout and grow roots and shoots.
  • The shoots grow upward away from the surface (if they are planted) and roots grow away from the sun and into the ground.
  • Slowly as the plant grows they use all the nutrients and energy from the potato to grow into a fully mature plant.
