Fantasy and pretending are not wrong in momentary useage, but in prolong use are potentially harmful to your mental state and overall well being.
Fantasy is a form of escapism. In moments of stress, fantasy allows you to break away from that weight to allievate its effect on you. Used correctly, fantasy allows for momentary relief, allowing you to then focus with renewed energy to overcome your obstacles. It can also be used to endure situations causing you mental or even physical distress as they happen. They can also be used as a way to preserve mental health when you're not mentally developed enough to possess better coping methods (children).
The problems with always maintaining a fantasy, as you suggest, to aid you with the mental strain of your past, is that you aren't “always” maintaining it. The fantasy is there only until it's not.
For example, you're not living this fantasy as you wrote your question nor when you read this. You're faced with your reality in these moments. You must have an alternate coping method to handle your situation when you are not actively living your fantasy.
There is also a part of your sane mind that prevents you from fully accepting this fantasy as you are capable of discerning reality from fantasy. Even when you live the fantasy, you recognize it is not real. This prevents you from fully submerging yourself in the fantasy world.
This coping method also never allows you to overcome your problem. You fantasize about altered history instead of truly coping with your past so you can live with it in the present. I would guess your other method is “avoidance” and distraction. When you're too busy to think about your problem, you do not need your fantasy. When you can’t distract yourself other thoughts, you use your fantasy to distract you and avoid facing realities.
Overcoming your past or any stress does not mean you have to be okay with what happened. It doesn't mean you magically forget the past either. But it does allow you to not be controlled by it. Each time you force yourself to dive into your fantasy, you're allowing your issues to control your actions.
My suggestion would be to seek alternative methods of coping with your issues, and seeking professional help to do so. This will allow someone with the tools to aid you the chance to find something that best works for you.
