in recent years multipurpose projects and dams have come under great scrutiny.
1.Due multipurpose projects the natural flow of water in rivers is disturbed.
2.Due to construction of Multipurpose projects local people had to migrate to other places.
3.Construction of multipurpose projects has led to deforestation in the nearby areas.
4.Due to construction of dams local people had lost their livelihood i.e. fishing as due to construction of dams fishes are not able to travel from one place to another.
5.Construction of dams had adversely affected the aquatic flora and fauna as many fauna had to migrate for spawning (laying eggs) and now due to dams they can't move from one place to another.

The reasons for multi-purpose projects and large dams coming under great scrutiny and opposition are
(i) Local communities have been displaced from their original settlement areas, with consequent loss of livelihood and income.
(ii) These projects create conflicts between people wanting to avail benefits from the same water resources. This leads to unseted disputes.
(iii) Objections have been raised about sedimentation of the reservoirs leading to floods in nearby areas, causing land degradation by deprivation of silt (a natural fertilizer) to the land, and other consequent problems associated with such projects.
