A reflex action is an action that takes place instinctively without proper thinking. It is a survival instinct and helps in situations where one is in imminent danger. It is the Spinal cord and the peripheral nervous system which result in reflex actions.
An example would be pulling back instinctively from the heat source on touching something hot.
