Mining devours Saranda, the largest sal forest in Asia

by Gurvinder Singh on 5 December 2018

Iron ore mining has caused destruction in the Saranda forest in Jharkhand, which is considered the largest sal forest in Asia.

The forests are home to the Birhor tribals, who are members of the particularly vulnerable tribal group. They have been facing health issues due to pollution and have not been employed in the mines citing lack of appropriate qualifications.

Studies carried out by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change and the Wildlife Institute of India have recorded a drop in biodiversity in the forest over the years.
