When wood is burnt it release very harmful gases like carbon dioxide that can also lead to death because of minimum amount of oxygen in the air.

when woods are burnt it releases carbon dioxide and water vapour.Due to accumulation of more carbon dioxide they felt suffocation.
when they opened window oxygen outside starts rushing inside the room which results in decrease in level of carbon dioxide
