If the lone pair of electrons in SF4 molecule occupied the equatorial position , there must be two repulsion which helps to prevent distortion of the molecule . If lone pair is occupying an axial position , then there 'll be three 90 degree lone pair and bond pair repulsion . This takes place to elude one pair and bond pair repulsion .

Answer:

-:here's your answer:-

In SF4 molecule, the lone pair of electrons occupies the equatorial position in preference to an axial position in the overall trigonal bipyramidal geometry.because if it dil be taken axial it will have bond pair and lone pair which will repel each other so, this arrangement is to avoid the lone pair - bond pair repulsion.

hope it helps you!!!
