Although Hydroelectric power is considered to be very cheap and one of the most positive renewable sources of energy, it has its own issues. Hydroelectric power has been used sustainably to produce energy mainly because it is easily available, cheap, and it does not produce any toxic greenhouse gases.
However, the issues that can be encountered by using hydroelectric power are -
1. Since dams and barrages are built for the hydroelectric power projects, they interfere with the natural flow of the rivers and other water bodies, which may affect the ecosystem adversely.
2. Although the total cost of producing the final energy might seem to be cost-effective compared to other sources, it is still an expensive project which includes high technology applications for topography studies, for the materials used etc.
3. The obstruction of the river flow over two different states may cause conflicts between the states and may interfere with the availability of water for the surrounding villages.
4. Since the natural course of the rivers, etc is blocked it may cause droughts and famines in the areas which do not receive enough water supply due to the construction of dams etc.
