well if u see that India is not a very wide country so it was decided that India can have one time zone (IST). India could also have had 2 time zones and the difference between east and west is of nearly 2 hrs and to avoid any confusion India decided to have 1 single time zone and which passes through Mirzapur near Allahabad in UP.

Explanation:
India has a vast stretch of land, that extends roughly from the 680 E to the 980 E longitudes, and as a result, India has a varied range of times. However, there would be a problem in adjusting with the time, while traveling intercity, if each zones had their own respective time.
This is why 'Indian Standard Time' (IMT) is determined based on one standard longitude 82.50 E called Standard Meridian of India. The 'Indian Standard Time' is five and a half hours ahead of the Greenwich Mean Time.
