In Sri Lankan English Syllabus, it shows since and as like this..
Ex: John couldn't take the book from the shelf as it was too high.
Since the book shelf was too high John couldn't take the book.
Are these sentences correct? ​

Yes both are correct

Because

Since the book shelf was too high John couldn't take the book.

In this sentence, since has same meaning that as has.

But in sentences like

I have been solving my math worksheets since 6 am.

In this sentence Since means From a point of time

John couldn't take the book from the shelf as it was too high.

Both these sentence are grammatically correct.
