In terms of chemistry, when a molecule is oxidised, oxygen gets attached to it.
Hence, oxide of a molecule is formed.
For example:-
↪ H2 + O2 ---> H2O
↪ C + O2 -----> CO2

durning oxidation.... molecules gain oxygen...if oxidation state is becoming more negative...
