The caste system in India was very strict and rigid in earlier times. The four castes the Brahman the Kshatriya the Vaishyas and the shudras for divided on the basis of their occupation. Activities such as a picking garbage, cutting hair and cleaning were consider your impure and task of lesser value. People who did these was seen as a dirty and impure. They were considered to be untouchable by the upper caste these so called the lower caste or known as a Dalits the word the Dalits means people who have been broken or oppressed. They were now referred to as the Scheduled Caste by the government.
