In The Bet by Anton Chekhov, why does the lawyer call the world a one without reason?

he says so because he wastes the best years of his life in the prison/room allotted to him. I'm those years he could have done wonders and now he has started hating everything including the money which he would get from the banker. cuz there was no point in getting that money. so therefore he calls the world without reason
