In the chapter 'Reedh Ki Haddi', Uma says that Shankar had to "hold the feet of the maid and that's how he got out of the situation"
What does this mean? I get the Girls' Hostel part but not this one. Please help.

he had to hold the feet of the maid because as he visited girls hostel and flirted with the girls,he had to ask sorry to girls in that way.
