In the circuit shown alongside the potential difference across the 4ohm resistor is 8 V.

(a) What is the current through the 4ohm resistor?

(b) What is the current through the 3ohmresistor?

(c) What is the potential difference across the 3 ohm resistor?

(d) What is the potential difference applied by the battery?

(Hint: Same current flows through the resistances connected in series. So, calculatecurrent flowing through the circuit from (a) and use it for other calculations]

Answer:

A) 2A

B) 2A

C) 6V

D) 14V

Explanation:

A) As we know that V= IR

                           =>   8/4=I

                          ∴ I=2A

B) As we know that same current flows through resistors in series so current of 2A flows through resistor of 3ohm resistor

C) V=IR

=>V=2X3

∴ V=6V

D) As the current of 2A is flowing through the circuit so and the resultant resistance is 4 ohm + 3 ohm = 7 ohm

   V=IR

=>V= 2X7

∴ V=14V
