Light Year means the distance covered by light in one year.  It is an astronomical unit used for measuring distances between celestial bodies in space.  Mathematically expressed, one light year is equal to 9.5 trillion kilometres or 5.9 trillion miles.  Light year as an astronomical unit was first used by Friedrich Bessel in the year 1838.
