In the case of a civil suit, the accused and accusing parties argue in a civil court. In case of civil suit, the punishment is in terms monetary fine or compensation. Or, it could be an order to the accused to do something and not to do something. But in case of criminal cases, the accused is treated as a threat to the whole society and nation. So punishment could be a long term in jail, monetary fine and also some other orders to follow.
Criminal cases do allow a jury for the trial. But in case of most civil cases, the judgement is done by a single judge. There is no jury for these.
In criminal cases the defendant is provided a government lawyer in case the defendant does not have a lawyer or he/she cannot afford one. In a civil case, the defendant has to pay for his /her own lawyer. Or else he/she has to argue for himself/herself.
In a civil case there may not be any FIR. A case may be filed directly with the court of law. In a criminal case usually a complaint is lodged with the police. The police files a First Information Report. This is compulsory. The case proceeds on the basis of FIR.
