1) Why is green leaf boiled in alcohol?
2) Why the test tube containing alcohol is not heated directly over the flame?
3) Why is Iodine solution used in this experiment?
4) What can you infer, if the color of the leaf turns blue-black?

Answer:

1) This procedure kills a leaf, disrupts the cell membranes and softens the cuticle and cell walls. This makes it possible to extract the chlorophyll with hot ethanol and also allows the iodine solution to penetrate the cells and react with any starch present.

2) The tube is immersed in the water bath as it includes alcohol and is readily flammable with alcohol. Directly heating the alcohol will catch fire. It's immersed in water to prevent alcohol from catching fire.

3) Iodine solution is added to the starch sample to change its colour to a deep blue colour.

4)The leaf that was in the light turns blue-black, which demonstrates that the leaf has been performing photosynthesis and producing starch.

Answer 1 :-

  • Green leaf is boiled in alcohol because to remove chlorophyll present in it. By this way we can properly identify the starch present in the leaf.

Answer 2 :-

  • Alchohol is not directly heatedto remove chlorophyll from the leaves because it is highly inflammable which can catch fire rapidly.

Answer 3 :-

  • Iodine is an indicator that turns the starch in blue-black which helps in identifying the presence of starch in it in the leaf.

Answer 4 :-

  • I can infer that colour of leaf turns blue-black, which demonstrates that the leaf has been performing photosynthesis and producing starch.
