(The missing diagra in the question  is attached below in the answer)

Given :

Length of the side of a square = r

To Find :

The value of the ratio Q/q from the given data = ?

Solution :

  • The  net force acting on Q is zero, so the charges Q and q should be of opposite sign.
  • Let Q be of positive sign and q be of negative sign.we know that the like charges repel each other and unlike charges attract each other.
  • Net force on Q = Force due to  q - Force due to  Q
  • Force due to  q = Force due to  Q

          \sqrt{(\frac{kQq}{r^{2} } )^{2}+ (\frac{kQq}{r^{2} } )^{2}} = {\frac{kQQ}{(\sqrt{2r})^{2} } }

          \sqrt{2(\frac{kQq}{r^{2} } )^{2}} = {\frac{kQQ}{(\sqrt{2r})^{2} } }

          \sqrt{2} \times \frac{kQq}{r^{2}}=\frac{kqQ}{2r^{2} }

          2\sqrt{2}Qq = Q^{2}

           \frac{Q}{q} =2\sqrt{2}

      The value of the ratio Q/q is 2√2
