In the first proof reading of a book containing 300 pages the following distribution of misprints was obtained:
Find the average number of misprints per page.

solution:

•No. of misprints

per pages (x): 0 1 2 3 4 5

•No. of pages (f): 154 95 36 9 5 1

• Now we will find corresponding FiXi which are 0 95 72 27 20 5

• Now find sum of FiXi i.e. 219

• also sum of Fi is 300 i.e. no. of pages

•Now, average no. of misprints(mean) is given as

(sum of FiXi)/(sum of Fi)

mean = 219/300

=0.73
