in the following figure PAB is a secant and PT is the tangent to the circle If PT=5 cm and PA=3cm then find the measurement of AB

First draw a circle. In that a tangent PAB is drawn that is secant and PT is the tangent to the given circle. Given PT = 5 cm and PA = 3 cm, we have to find the measurement of AB

The following attachment of the figure shows the tangent drawn to the circle. From the theorem, in a circle secant is PAB and tangent is PT.

So we have  

We have PT^2 = PA x PB

            5^2 = 3 (3 + x)

              25 = 9 + 3x  

        3x = 16

      x = 16/3 cm  

Now we have the length of AB as 16/3 cm .
