SF6 electronic configuration =[Ne] 3 S2 3P4

electronic configuration in second excited state=[Ne] 3s1 3p3 3d2 .

so, In second excited state 6 unpaired electrons exist which can from 6 bonds so in 3rd excited state SF6 is formed..

In the formation of the SF₆ molecule, the sulfur atom is in the 2nd excited state.

  • In SF₆ molecule, S is in + 6 Oxidation State.
  • The atomic number of Sulfur is 16. Hence its electronic configuration is:

         1s² 2s² 2p⁶ 3s² 3p⁴

  • To form 6 S-F bonds, we need 6 unpaired electrons. So 1 electron each from 3p and 3s orbital jumps to the 3d orbital.
  • Since two electrons have jumped to a higher energy orbital, this is called the second excited state of Sulfur.
