In the given figure angle A of the triangle ABC is a right angle. The circle on AC as

diameter cuts BC at D. If BD = 9 and DC = 7, calculate the length of AB.​

1. Join AD

2. ∠ ADC = 90 ° (∵ Angle substending the diameter is 90°)

3. Δ ADC is similar to ΔBAC ( ∵ ∠ADC = ∠BAC = 90° and ∠C = ∠C - common        angle - AA similarity)

4. BC / AC = AC / DC

5 . ∴ AC² = BC × DC

        AC² = 16 × 7

              =    112

6.  AB² = √(256-112)

            =  144

7. AB = 12
