seems iron is a transition metal and these metals have two shells incomplete so they show variable valency.

Hey Friend,
Elements like Iron & copper have different valency's Because According to their Property of combining, Their Physical appearance was same, i.e. of coop/iron. But They combine diffently. Hence They have variable valency, outer octate/shell electrons vary in number.
