The black African Americans during those times (late 1800 – early 1900), were mostly superstitious. They were intimidated by the Ku Klux Klan members who dressed themselves up in white robes and conical masks, which helped the Klan members to escape identification. They also held night time parades and marches. Another tactic was to burn crosses at night which scared the blacks.

The Ku Klux Klan engaged in night time raids on blacks’ homes and whipped and killed the freed men and their supporters.
